In Griechenland gibt es nur Wirtschaftskrisen und Olympia? Weit gefehlt. Es gibt auch richtig gute Metalbands, eine davon ist Battleroar und veröffentlichte 2008 ihr drittes Album “To death and beyond…”. Ein Album, das in keiner gut sortierten Metalsammlung fehlen sollte.

Eine epische Gitarrensequenz eröffnet den ersten Song “Wrathforge”. Nach zwei Minuten nimmt er richtig Fahrt auf und steigert sich zu einem fetten Rocker. Ein Riffgewitter jagt das nächste und Marco Congoreggis kraftvolle Stimme verleiht dem Stück eine erhabene Atmosphäre. Ungewöhnlicher aber ganz starker Opener.

Mit „Dragonhelm“ geht es heavy weiter. Battleroar holen die Streitäxte raus und feuern ein Brett raus, das es nur so kracht. Die Gitarren von Kostas Tzortzis und Manolis Karazeris glühen und Nick Papadopoulos schlägt auf sein Drumkit ein, als ob es kein Morgen mehr gäbe.

Ein Violinensolo leitet das nächste Epos „Finis mundi“ ein. Neun Minuten voller Spielfreude, fetter Riffs und melancholischer Violinenparts. Marco passt seine Stimme wunderbar den gegebenen Arrangements an und findet zu jeder Passage den richtigen Klang.

„Metal from Hellas“ und „Hyrkanian blades“ ziehen das Tempo wieder an und überzeugen mit Chorgesang im Refrain, erstklassigem Drumming und grandioser Gitarrenarbeit.

Richtig episch wird es mit „Oceans of pain“: Schon das Eröffnungsriff lässt erahnen in welche Sphären es geht. Eine Songstruktur die mich stark an Axel Rudi Pell erinnert, melodisch, heavy und episch. Vor allem der Instrumentalteil am Ende des Songs dringt in Sphären vor, die ich seit Uriah Heeps „July morning“ und Candlemass/Abstrakt Algebras „Dustflow“ nicht mehr gehört habe. Eine Hymne zum Niederknien und genießen.

Mit einem richtigen Nackenbrecher geht es weiter: „Born in the 70’s“ lädt zum ausgelassenen Headbanging ein. Starke Riffs, melodischer Refrain und punktgenaues Drumming, mehr braucht es nicht für einen richtig guten Song. Auch „Warlords of Mars“ steht seinem Vorgänger in nichts nach.

Der letzte Song „Death before disgrace“ wird mit einer Akustikgitarre eingeleitet, mit einsetzen der Elektrischen driftet er aber wieder ins Epische ab. Pell’sches Riffing und starke Vocals tragen den Song und sorgen für einen ganz starken Abschluss des Albums. Am liebsten möchte man die Repeattaste drücken und das ganze Album in einer Dauerschleife hören.

In Greece, there are only economic crises and Olympics? Not even close. There are also really good metalbands, one of them is Battleroar and released their third album TO DEATH AND BEYOND in 2008. An album that should not be missing in any well-stocked metal-collection.

An epic guitar sequence opens the first song „Wrathforge“. After two minutes it gathers pace and increases to a fat rocker. A riff storm chases the next and Marco Congoreggi’s powerful voice lends the piece a sublime atmosphere. Unusual but very strong opener.

With „Dragonhelm“ it goes heavy. Battleroar get the battle-axes out and fire a board that just crashes. The guitars of Kostas Tzortzis and Manolis Karazeris glow and Nick Papadopoulos hits his drum kit as if there was no tomorrow.

A violin solo introduces the next epic „Finis mundi“. Nine minutes full of joy, fat riffs and melancholic violin parts. Marco fits his voice wonderfully to the given arrangements and finds the right sound for every passage.

„Metal from Hellas“ and „Hyrkanian blades“ revive the tempo and convince with choral singing in the chorus, first-class drumming and superb guitar work.

Really epic it gets with „Oceans of pain“: The opening riff lets you guess in which spheres it goes. A song structure that strongly reminds me of Axel Rudi Pell, melodic, heavy and epic. Especially the instrumental part at the end of the song penetrates spheres, which I no longer heard since Uriah Heeps „July morning“ and Candlemass / Abstract Algebras „Dustflow“. A hymn to kneeling down and enjoying.

It goes on with a real neckbreaker: „Born in the 70’s“ invites you to boisterous headbanging. Strong riffs, melodic refrain and point-accurate drumming, it does not take more for a really good song. Also „Warlords of Mars“ is in no way inferior to its predecessor.

The last song „Death before disgrace“ is initiated with an acoustic guitar, but with the electric, it drifts back into the epic. Pell-like riffing and strong vocals carry the song and ensure a very strong close of the album. The best thing to do is to press the repeat button and listen to the entire album in a loop.
