Hallo Chiara, hallo Marco. Temperance ist ja eine recht junge Band, gegründet Ende 2013. Erzählt den deutschen Musikfans bitte, was Ihr vorher gemacht habt, warum Ihr die Band gegründet habt und was Ihr in diesem ein und ein viertel Jahren gemacht habt.

Marco – Wir hatten verschiedene musikalische Entwicklungen. Wir spielten zuvor in verschiedenen Bands und wir hatten die Chance, viel mit ihnen zu touren, und all dies war natürlich eine große Hilfe bei der Gründung von Temperance, so konnten wir mit einiger Erfahrung aufwarten, was den Start ein wenig leichter  gemacht  hatte. Einige von uns, so auch ich, spielen noch in anderen Bands oder Nebenprojekten, aber ich denke, es ist ein guter Weg, es mit verschiedenen Musikstile und Einflüssen zu versuchen.

So, wir haben Temperance vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr gegründet, aber jetzt haben wir das Ziel das zweite Studioalbum fertigzustellen, nach dem wir  innerhalb weniger Monate sehr viel gutes erreicht haben, sowohl bei der Studioarbeit als auch Live. Dies brachte uns viele Auftritte auf europäischen und amerikanischen Bühnen während der letzten Tour, mit der wir das erste Album präsentierten

Ihr habt im April 2014 eurer Debutalbum “Temperance” veröffentlicht. Und bereits 11 Monate später erscheint bereits der Nachfolger. Warum erscheinen die beiden Alben so kurz nacheinander? Das ist im Musikbusiness der Gegenwart ja unüblich.

Chiara – Nun, im letzten Jahr hatten wir die Möglichkeit, viel Zeit gemeinsam zu verbringen und viel zu reisen, um unsere Musik rund um den Globus zu bringen. Dieses Menge an Erfahrungen hat uns eine Menge neuer Ideen und Inspirationen  gebracht und dies ist wahrscheinlich der Grund dafür dass wir sofort, nachdem wir von unserer US-Westküsten-Tour zurück nach Hause kamen,  das Bedürfnis hatten, unsere Gefühle in Musik und Worte zu fassen. So denke ich wurde „Limitless“ geboren.

Euer zweites Album trägt den Namen “Limitless” (dt. grenzenlos, schrankenlos). Wofür steht der Titel? Ist das ein Gleichnis z.B. für ein gemeinsames Miteinander der Menschheit in unserer Welt?

Chiara – Zu Beginn unserer Tour haben wir uns entschlossen, Songs zu schreiben, in der Weise, dass wir alle musikalischen Stilrichtungen, die uns vielleicht gefallen, ausschöpfen.  Tatsachlich kannst Du fast alles von Metal über Pop bis zu Electro und vielen anderen Genres in unserer Musik finden. Das gilt sicherlich auch für unser Debütalbum, aber bei „Limitless“ haben wir beschlossen, weitere neue Richtungen zu erkunden und über alle Grenzen hinweg zu gehen. Das ist die wahre Bedeutung von „Limitless“

“Limitless” wurde in den Domination Studios gemischt und gemastert. In diesen Studios gaben bereits andere namhafte Bands ihre Alben produziert, wie zum Beispiel Ancient Bards, Elvenking oder auch Voodoo Highway. Warum fiel Eure Wahl auf dieses Studio?

Marco – Wir haben beschlossen, uns wieder dem Domination-Label und der guten Arbeit von Simone Mularoni zu vertrauen, dem zu folgen, was wir beim Debüt-Album schon gemacht haben; tatsächlich hat er mit uns unser erstes, selbstbetitelte Album produziert und wir wollten es mit ihm erneut versuchen, um gemeinsam zu wachsen und um etwas Bleibendes und Kraftvolles zu produzieren. Das heißt, es gibt eine starke Freundschaft mit Simone und gegenseitigen künstlerischen Respekt.

In meiner Rezension habe ich festgestellt, dass es in Euren Songs recht hart zur Sache geht. Peitschende Gitarren, vorwärts treibendes Schlagzeug, häufig unterlegt von teilweise hektisch gespielten Keyboard-Teppichen. Eine Ballade sucht man auf dem Album vergeblich. War es eine bewusste Entscheidung auf eine Ballade zu verzichten?

Chiara – Ja  unser neues Album beinhaltet recht harte Songs und harte Riffs. Angesprochen auf das Fehlen einer echten Ballade wir können nicht sagen, dass es geplant war, aber wir folgten nur dem Strom unserer Inspirationen, und dieser Strom hat uns nicht auf den Weg zum Komponieren einer klassischen Ballade geführt. Stattdessen gibt es Songs wie „Stay“ und „Goodbye“, die eine Ballade am Anfang ähneln, sich später aber in einer ganz anderen Art und Weise entwickeln.

Chiara, Du hast eine schöne klare Stimme. Du singst sowohl rockige Parts, gehst bei einigen Songs aber auch in höhere Tonlagen und präsentierst opernartigen Gesang. Hattest Du eine gesangliche Ausbildung?

Chiara – Vielen Dank für deine freundlichen Worte. Ja, ich habe fast zehn Jahre Operngesang studiert, und erst in den letzten paar Jahren habe ich mich dem modernen Gesang angenähert. Ich kann nur sagen, dass ich beide Stile mag  und ich bin sehr froh, nicht nur auf Operngesang fokussiert zu sein sondern auch den modernen Weg gestartet zu haben: dies ermöglicht es mir, mich auf vielfältige Weise auszudrücken

Wie läuft bei Euch das Songwriting ab? Soweit ich weiß, ist Marco der Hauptkomponist. Fließen in die Songs auch Ideen der anderen Band-Mitglieder ein?

Marco – Nein, ich bin nicht der Hauptkomponist da ich und Giulio Schlagzeuger und Keyboarder von Temperance, gemeinsam an der Musik der Band arbeiten. Ein ganzer Song oder nur ein Teil davon könnte durch einen von uns geschrieben sein, aber dann arbeiten wir gemeinsam, mischen unsere Ideen und Persönlichkeiten, so dass wir den typischen Sound von Temperance mit einer starken Wirkung, Melodien, aufwendiger Orchestrierung, harten Gitarrenriffs und so weiter erhalten . Giulio ist darüber hinaus ein großartiger Arrangeur, der in der Lage ist, auch einfache Orchesterskizzen zum Leben zu erwecken und es fließen zu lassen .

Natürlich ist dies nicht der letzte Schritt, da, auch wenn wir beide fast alles  bei Temperance komponieren, die anderen Jungs hart an den Kompositionen mitarbeiten und mit ihrer Hilfe und vor allem Chiaras Stimme neue Stimmungen und eine ganz neue Persönlichkeit zu den Songs geben. Auf diese Weise erschaffen wir unserem Sound!

In Euren Songs erkennt man recht deutlich Eure Vorbilder: Amaranthe, Delain oder auch Within Temptation, allerdings ohne diese zu kopieren. Inwieweit haben Euch diese (und weitere) Bands bei Euren Aufnahmen beeinflusst?

Marco –  unter den Bands, die Du erwähnt hast ist meine Lieblingsband Amaranthe, wegen den kraftvollen Melodien in ihren Songs. Ich mochte so viel von Delain’s früheren Alben und weiterhin einige der letzten Within Temptation Alben. Wahrscheinlich werde ich Dich enttäuschen, denn entgegen deiner Feststellung sind ich und Giulio vor allem durch andere Sounds, Stile und Künstler inspiriert worden; Besonders mögen wir Bands wie TOTO oder beispielsweise Savatage mit ihren speziellen Chöre und deren theatralischer Teile. Unter den neuen Bands? H.E.A.T. Mit Sicherheit die beste Rockband im Moment, mit diesen fantastischen Chören!

Hi Chiara, Hello Marco. Temperance is indeed a relatively young band, founded in late 2013.Please tell the German music fans what you’ve done before, why did you started the band and what have you done in this one and a quarter years.

Marco – We had different music paths. We had different bands before and we had the chance to tour a lot with them and all this, of course, was a big help for Temperance to born with some experience which made everything a little bit easier to start. Some of us, me too, have still other bands or side projects but I think it’s a good way try different music styles and solutions.

So, as Temperance, we were born a little over a year, but now we’re reaching the goal of the second studio album, after building something good in a few months, both about the studio works and the live. This brought us to many european and american stages during the last tour to support the first album.

You released your debut album „Temperance“ in April 2014. And already 11 months later, the successor will be released. Why are the two albums published so quickly? That’s unusual in the music industry of today.

Chiara – Well, in the last year we have been given the chance to spend a lot of time all together and to travel a lot to bring our music round the world. This bunch of experiences has brought us a lot of new ideas and sources of inspiration for sure an this probably why, after we came back home from our US West Coast Tour, we immediately feel the need to put our emotions in music and words. This i show “ Limitless” was born.

Your second album is called „Limitless“. What does the title mean? Is this a parable for e.g.  the cooperation of mankind in our world?

Chiara –  From the very beginning of our journey, we have decided to write songs in way to put every musical style we might like. In facts, you can find almost everything from metal , to pop, to electro,and many other genres in our music. This is true for our debut album , for sure, but in “ Limitless” we decided to further  explore new solutions and to go beyond all boundaries . This is the real meaning of “ Limitless”

„Limitless“ was mixed and mastered at Domination Studios in San Marino. In these studios other famous bands have already produced their albums, such as Ancient Bards, Elvenking or Voodoo Highway. Why did your choice fell on this studio?

Marco – We decided to entrust again the Domination and the great work of Simone Mularoni, to follow what we have done on the debut album; in fact he produced with us the eponymous album and we wanted to go on with him, trying to grow together to build something lasting and powerful. That said, there’s a strong friendship with Simone and a mutual artistic respect.

In my review I have determined that in your songs are pretty hard. Lash guitars, forward driving drums, often backed by partially frantically played keyboard carpets. You will not find any ballad on the album. Was it a conscious decision to do without a ballad?

Chiara –  Yes, our new album includes pretty hard songs and heavy riffs. Talking about the absence of a proper ballad , we cannot say that it was a couscous choice, but that we just followed the stream of our inspiration, and that stream didn’t lead us to the composition of a classical ballad. Instead there are songs like “ Stay” and “ Goodbye” that resemble a ballad in the beginning , but later they develop in a completely different way.

Chiara, you have a nice clear voice. You sing both rock but also go for some songs in higher pitches and are presenting operatic singing. Did you have a vocal training?

Chiara – Thank you for your kind words. Yes, i have been studying operatic singing almost ten years now, and only in the last couple of years, i have approached modern singing. I can say that i like both styles and that i am very happy not to have focused only on operatic singing , but instead to have started also the modern path: this allows me to express myself in many different ways.

How have you proceeded the songwriting? As far as I know, Marco is the main composer. Are the ideas of all the band members part of the songs?

Marco – No, I’m not the main composer since me and Giulio, drummer and keyboards player of Temperance, work together on the band’s music. An entire song or just a part of it could be composed by one of us but then we work together mixing our ideas and personalities and the we get the typical Temperance’s sound with a strong impact, melodies, huge orchestrations, sharp guitar riffs and so on. Giulio, moreover, is a great arranger, able to bring to life and make it flow also a simple orchestral sketch.

Of course this is not the final step since also if we compose almost everything in Temperance, the other guys work hard on the compositions and with their help and expecially Chiara’s voice they give a new mood and a brand new personality to the songs. This is how we craft our sound!

In your songs can be heard your idols very clearly: Amaranthe, Delain or Within Temptation, but without to copy these bands. To what extent have you influenced these (and other) bands in your recordings?

Marco – Personally among the bands you mentioned my favourite are Amaranthe, for the powerful melodies in their songs. I liked so much some Delain’s past albums and so some of the last Within Temptation’s albums. Probably I’ll go against telling you that me and Giulio are mainly inspired by other sounds, styles and artists; especially we love bands like TOTO or for example Savatage with their special choirs and their more theatrical parts. Among the new bands? H.E.A.T. For sure, the best rock act at the moment, with those fantastic choruses!
