Interview mit Sänger Stefano De Marco

Hallo Stefano. Vielen Dank, das Ihr dieses Interview mit macht. Bis vor kurzem war mir die Band At The Dawn völlig unbekannt. Ich denke, vielen Fans geht es ähnlich. Stellt Euch bitte zunächst einmal kurz vor.

Zunächst einmal vielen Dank für das Interview und für deine Zeit. Wir gründeten uns im Jahr 2011 mit der Idee, die Musik zu schaffen und zu spielen, die wir gerne hören: eine Mischung aus Power und Heavy Metal, aber mit symphonischen Elementen bereichert und dabei wollten wir uns immer auf Melodie konzentrieren.

Im April 2012 erschien Euer Debutalbum “Countdown To Infinity”. Drei Jahre später veröffentlicht Ihr nun den Nachfolger „Land In Sight“. Wie unterscheiden sich die beiden Alben?

Eigentlich war „Countdown To Infinity“ eine EP die wir produziert haben , um einen Platten-Deal zu bekommen; tatsächlich haben wir im Oktober 2012 einen Vertrag mit Buil2Kill unterzeichnet, und wir haben im Januar 2013 unsere erste LP veröffentlicht: „From dawn to dusk“. Unser neues Album „Land in sight“ ist etwas anders als das erste: die Songs sind länger und komplexer. Auf jeden Fall ist „Land in sight“ die natürliche Weiterentwicklung unserer Musik und natürlich es ist reifer als „From dawn to dusk“.

“Count To Infinity” ist zwar kein Konzeptalbum. Aber es zieht sich ein roter Faden durch. Ihr erzählt Geschichten und Legenden. Sage bitte etwas zu den Inhalten.

Ich persönlich mag es nicht, über Aktuelles, Soziales und so weiter zu schreiben, weil diese Themen reichlich von den Medien aufgeblasen werden. Unsere Texte basieren auf Geschichte, Legenden und Mythen . Manchmal erzähle ich wahre Geschichten, manchmal benutze ich einfach meine Phantasie. Ich mag auch Fantasy .

Auf dem Cover Eures Albums ist ein Super Artwork zu sehen. Ein Dreimaster in stürmischer See aber es ist Land in Sicht. Welche Beziehungen habt Ihr zum Meer und der Seefahrt?

Auf dem Album-Cover haben wir viele Elemente verwendet, die an die Songs des Albums selbst erinnern : das Schiff mit dem Namen „Deserter“ (Deserteur – Anm. kb), wie Du auf dem Heck lesen kannst und auf dem Segel kannst Du „The Tiger“ sehen; alles ist von einem „darkened sky“ (dunklen Himmel – Anm. kb) und dem Meer umgeben. Auf der Rückseite, die Du bisher noch nicht gesehen hast, ist eine Sirene am Strand dargestellt, die beobachtet wie das Schiff ankommt. Das Land in Sicht ist der mögliche Ankunftspunkt für das Schiff, Wir denken, dass dieses Album eine ähnliche Bedeutung für unsere Musik hat … vielleicht werden wir zu unserem Endpunkt kommen oder auch nicht, wie auch immer es ist eine stürmischer See zum Navigieren .

Habt Ihr das Cover selbst entworfen oder habt Ihr Euch einen Grafiker dafür gesucht?

Wir haben ein Grafikdesigner engagiert, Domenico Neziti, der für die Star Wars Comics-Serie und viele andere Comic arbeitet, der aber zum Glück auch ein guter Freund von mir ist. Er hat das Cover, die Rückseite und das Booklet unserer beiden Alben erstellt.

Die drei Songs “Ouverture”, “The Offense” und “The Revenge” gehören als “Rosamund’s Suite” thematisch zusammen. Erzählt wird die Geschichte der Langobarden-Königin Rosamund. Wie bist Du auf diese Geschichte gekommen?

Dies ist eine der Geschichten die ich gerne erzähle, denn es ist die perfekte Mischung aus Geschichte und Legenden. Ich sah, als ich jung war, ein Bild von Königin Rosamund, auf dem sie aus dem Schädel ihres Vaters trank und diese Szene hat sich in meinen Gedanken festgesetzt. Die Tatsache an sich ist eine Legende, aber Rosamund war wirklich eine Königin, die König Alboino (ihren Ehemann) in einem Anflug von Rache getötet hat.

In der „Rosamund’s Suite“ und bei „Siren Call“ ist Letizia Chiozzivon der italienischen Gothic Metal Band “Synful Ira” als Gastsängerin zu hören. Wie kam es zu dieser Zusammenarbeit?

Ich habe nach einer weiblichen Stimme für diese zwei Songs gesucht und ich habe Synful Ira auf youtube angehört. Letizia wohnt in Rimini, nicht allzu weit von Imola entfernt, also tat Facebook den Rest. Ich mag ihre Stimme denn sie ist sinnlich und beißend zugleich.

Wie entstehen die Songs bei Euch. Gibt es einen Haupt-Songwriter oder fließen die Ideen aller Bandmitglieder in das Songwriting ein?

Normalerweise hat einer von uns eine ungefähre Vorstellung von einem Song, dann fügen andere Mitglieder ihrer Teile hinzu. Zuletzt arbeiten wir bei den Proben alle gemeinsam an dem Song.

Eure Songs sind sehr abwechslungsreich. Von welchen Bands wurdet Ihr in Eurer musikalischen Entwicklung beeinflusst?

Die Songs sind abwechslungsreich, weil wir viele musikalische Einflüsse haben: einige von uns waren Mitglieder einer Death Metal Band und sie hören normalerweise zum Beispiel In Flames. Andere hören Power und Prog-Metal wie Stratovarius, Dream Theater und so weiter. Mir persönlich gefallen Kamelot, Jorn Lande, AOR im Allgemeinen und natürlich meine Götter: die Iron Maiden sehr.

Der letzte Song Eures Albums ist das Iron Maiden Cover „Revelations“. Warum gerade dieser Song?

Ich fragte meinen Bandkollegen, ob wir ein Cover von Iron Maiden produzieren wollen, weil ich denke, dass sie die beste Metal-Band sind; Ich habe vor vielen Jahren begonnen Heavy Metal zu hören und ich bin mit dem Hören ihrer Musik aufgewachsen; Revelations ist mein Lieblingssong von ihnen.

Ihr habt Euer Album in den Domination Studios San Marino aufgenommen. Dort haben vor Euch schon Bands wie De La Muerte, Ancient Bards, Elvenking oder Voodoo Highway produziert. Warum habt Ihr Euch für dieses Studio entschieden?

Wir haben das, DGM-Album „Momentum“ gehört und sein Sound hat uns buchstäblich in unseren Köpfen eingebrannt: “ Verdammt noch mal, wer hat das produziert“ … so … Michele Vinci hat Simone Mularoni angerufen und wir begannen unsere Zusammenarbeit mit ihm ..

Studioaufnahmen sind nicht billig. Wie habt Ihr die Produktion in diesem renommierten Studio finanziert?

Nun, Simone Mularoni hat uns einem fairen Preis gemacht, und wir haben das gesamte Album in weniger als 2 Wochen aufgenommen, gemischt und gemastert    , so dass die Kosten nicht zu hoch gewesen sind.

Könnt Ihr zurzeit von Eurer Musik leben oder habt auch noch reguläre Jobs?

Oh nein … es ist heutzutage ganz unmöglich, von der Musik zu lebenwenn du nicht berühmt bist. Wir alle haben einen regulären Job außer Mattia (Drums), der studiert um Arzt zu werden. Musik ist das Entlüftungsventil der täglichen Routine, das allmählich anfängt,  uns etwas Zufriedenheit zu geben.

Was plant Ihr für die Zukunft? Wird es eine Tournee durch Europa geben?

Wir werden uns in den nächsten Monaten der Promotion des Albums widmen, und es live in Italien spielen. Wir arbeiten auch daran, eine kleine Tour durch Europa, oder etwas ähnliches, zu organisieren … mal sehen.

Vielen Dank für dieses interessante Interview, Stefano. Gibt es noch etwas, das Du den Metal-Fans in Deutschland sagen möchtest?

Ja, ich möchte ihnen sagen, dass sie die Underground-Musik ihres Landes unterstützen sollen , aber nicht nur diese, weil es viele versteckte  Rohdiamanten zu entdecken gibt, die ihre Unterstützung brauchen, um Brillanten zu werden.

Interview with singer Stefano De Marco

Hello Stefano. Thank you that you are doing this interview. Until recently, the band At The Dawn was completely unknown to me. I think it’s the same for many other fans. Please briefly introduce yourself at first.

First of all thank you for this interview and for your time. We formed in 2011 with the idea to create and play the music we like to listen to: a mix of power and heavy but enriched with symphonic elements and doing that we always focus on melody.

Your debut album „Countdown To Infinity“ was released in April 2102. Three years later you are now publishing its follower „Land In Sight“. What are the differences between the two albums?

Really “Countdown to infinity” was the EP we have realized to find a record deal; in fact in October 2012 we have signed a deal with Buil2Kill records and we have published in January 2013 our first LP : “From dawn to dusk”. Our new album “Land in sight” is a bit different from the first : the songs are longer and more complex. Anyway “Land in sight” is the natural evolution of our music and of course it’s more mature than “From dawn to dusk”.

„Count To Infinity“ is not a concept album. But it runs through a red thread. You tell stories and legends. Please say something about the contents.

Personally I don’t like to write about actuality, social and so on, cause they are themes abundantly inflated on media. Our lyrics are based on history, legends and myth; sometimes I tell true stories, other times I simply use my imagination. I like fantasy too.

On the cover of your album a super artwork can be seen. A three-master in a stormy sea but land is in sight. What kind of relationship do you have to the sea and seafaring?

In the album cover we have put many elements that recall the songs of the album itself: the ship is called “deserter” as you can see on the poop and on the sail you can see “the tiger”; all surrounded by a “darkened sky” and sea. In the back cover, you have not already seen, there is a siren on the beach that is looking at the ship arriving. As a land in sight is the possible arrival point for a ship, we consider that this album has a similar meaning for our music…maybe we’ll arrive at our final point or maybe not, anyway it’s a stormy sea to navigate .

Have you designed the cover by yourself or have you engaged a graphic designer?

We have engaged a graphic designer, Domenico Neziti, who works for the Star Wars comic series and many other comics, but who is, fortunately also a dear friend of mine. He has designed the cover, the back and the booklet of both our albums.

The three songs „Overture“, „The Offense“ and „The Revenge“ are thematically grouped as „Rosamund’s Suite“. It tells the story of the Lombards Queen Rosamund. How did you come up with this story?

This is one of the stories I like to tell cause it’s a perfect mix between history and legends. I saw when I was young a painting of the queen Rosamund in which she was drinking from the skull of her father and this scene was impressed on my mind. The fact itself is a legend, but Rosamund was really a queen who killed king Alboino (his husband) in a conjure for revenge.

In the „Rosamund’s Suite“ and „Siren Call“ Letizia Chiozzivon from the Italian gothic metal band „Synful Ira“ is to hear as guest vocalist. How did it come to this collaboration?

I was looking for a female voice for these two songs and I have listened Synful Ira on youtube. Letizia lives in Rimini, not too far from Imola, so Facebook did the rest. I like her voice cause it’s sensual and biting the same way.

How do you create the songs? Is there a main songwriter or flow the ideas of all band members into the song writing?

Usually one of us brings a rough idea of a song, then others members add their parts. At last we work on the song all together at rehearsals.

Your songs are very varied. Which bands influenced your musical development?

The songs are varied because we have many musical influences: some of us were members of a death metal band and they usually listen to Inflames for example. Others listen to power and prog, such as Stratovarius, Dream Theater and so on. Personally I like very much Kamelot, Jorn Lande, AOR in general and obviously, my gods: the Iron Maiden.

The last song of your album, is the Iron Maiden Cover „Revelations“. Why did you choose this song?

I asked my band mates to realize a cover of the Iron Maiden because I think they are the best metal band; I have started listening to heavy metal many years ago and I’ve grown listening to their music ; Revelations is my favourite song of them.

You recorded your album in the Domination Studios San Marino. Before you bands like De La Muerte, Ancient Bards, Elvenking or Voodoo Highway have recorded there, too. Why did you decide this studio?

We have listened to DGM album “Momentum” and its sound has literally struck our minds : “Bloody hell, who has produced that?!”… so… Michele Vinci has called Simone Mularoni and we started our collaboration with him.

Studio recordings are not cheap. How did you finance the production in this renowned studio?

Well, Simone Mularoni has made us an honest price and we have recorded, mixed and mastered the entire album in less than 2 weeks, so the cost has been not too expensive.

Can you currently live from your music or do you have regular jobs in addition?

Oh no…nowadays is quite impossible to live making music if you are not famous. We all have a regular job except Mattia (Drums) who is studying to become a Doctor. Music is the vent valve of the daily routine that is beginning to give us some satisfactions.

What are you planning for the future? Will there be a tour through Europe?

We will dedicate the next months to the promotion of the album, playing it live in Italy. We are working also to organize a little tour, or something similar, in Europe…let’s see.

Thank you for this interesting interview, Stefano. Is there something you want to say to the metal fans in Germany?

Yeah, I would like to say them to support the underground music  of their country, at first but not only,  because there are hidden many rough diamonds to be discovered that need their support to become brilliants.
