Vor wenigen Wochen erschien mit “Omega Thanatos”) das nunmehr dritte Studio-Album der belgischen Industrial/Elektro Metal Band Skeptical Minds. Ein abwechslungs- und facettenreiches Werk, das sich dem Hörer erst nach mehreren Durchläufen erschließt. Dazu gibt es ein Comic-Heft, das die Liedtexte mit diversen Zeichnungen unterlegt. Grund genug, bei der Band einmal die Hintergründe nachzufragen.

RK: Hallo Karolina, hallo Michel. Ihr seid eine belgische Band aus Brüssel habt jedoch kein einziges Band-Mitglied aus Belgien. Wie kam es dazu? Stellt den deutschen Fans Eure Band bitte kurz vor.

Skeptical Minds: Hallo Rainer, zunächst einmal vielen Dank für die Zeit, die Du Dir für uns genommen hast.  Fast alle Bandmitglieder haben bereits in Belgien gelebt, außer Karolina, die in den Niederlanden wohnte, als  sie Mitglied der Band wurde. Als die Arbeit mit der  Band ernster wurde, zog sie nach Belgien, um näher bei der Band zu sein.

RK: Zu Eurer Live-DVD „Watch Your Live“ wurde ein Comic-Heft produziert. Auch zu Eurem neuen Album soll es ein Comic-Heft geben. Wie seid Ihr auf diese Idee gekommen? Wer hat sich die Story dazu ausgedacht und wer hat die Zeichnungen gestaltet?

SM: Wir haben kein Comic-Buch für  „Watch your live“ produziert, es ist eine DVD, aber ohne Buch Allerdings haben wir  für das letzte Album in der Tat  CD + Comic produziert. welches den Namen „Omega Thanatos“ hat. Das Konzept war es, eine Art von Soundtrack für den Comic zu schaffen, wenn man genau hinhört und den Comic liest wirst Du sehen, dass alles miteinander verbunden ist und  nicht getrennt werden kann. Die Zeichnungen wurden von unserem lieben Freund (und jetzigem Band-Mitglied ) Alain Poncelet, der ein großartiger Comic-Designer ist, erstellt! Die Geschichte wurde von der Band und Alain entworfen.

RK: In Euren Songs verwendet Ihr eine Vielzahl Sounds, die eigentlich nicht typisch für den Heavy Metal sind und etwas an Techno-Klänge erinnern. Außerdem verwendet ihr ein Cello in Euren Songs. Dazu gibt es auch knackige Gitarrenriffs. Wie würdet Ihr selbst Euren Musikstil beschreiben.

SM: Es ist schwer, unsere Musik zu beschreiben, da wir uns nicht auf ein Genre festlegen. Weil wir gerne viel experimentieren gibt es eine Mischung aus Metal, Rock, Cold Wave, Rock, Gothic, Elektro, Industrial …

RK: Karolina, inmitten der Industrial Klänge und der Gitarrenriffs wirkt Deine klare Stimme häufig schön beruhigend. Nimmst Du eigentlich Gesangsunterricht?

SM: Vielen Dank, ich hatte ein paar Unterrichtsstunden in der Vergangenheit, aber vor allem übe ich allein. Seit kurzem skype ich mit meiner Freundin Aziza (Aria Flamme), und sie gibt mir tolle Tipps für meinen Gesang!

RK: Dies steht manchmal im Widerspruch zu Deinem Auftreten auf der Bühne. Da explodierst Du förmlich. Was bedeuten Dir Live-Auftritte, wie zum Beispiel beim Metal Female Voices Fest?

SM: Es ist immer eine tolle Erfahrung. ich fühle mich wie ein Gewittersturm. Vulkan! Sturm! Bang!

Es ist sehr schön, wenn so viele Fans die Songs mitsingen und wir ihr Lächeln zu sehen. Letztendlich stehen wir  vor allem für sie auf der Bühne. Es ist wunderbar!

RK: Karolina, zum ersten Mal habe ich Dich beim 7. Metal Female Voices Fest 2009 gesehen. Du bist mir sofort aufgefallen in Deinem hellblauen Kleid und der silbernen Krone im Haar. Erst Jahre später habe ich realisiert, dass die hübsche Fee die Sängerin bei Skeptical Minds ist. Es gibt von Dir sehr viele Bilder als Fee. Welche Beziehung hast Du zur Welt der Feen und anderer Mythen?

SM: Aber ich bin eine Fee haha! OK im Ernst, ich glaube, dass es andere Welten gibt, die vor unseren Augen verborgen bleiben. Wir als Erwachsene haben die Möglichkeit, ‚Dinge‘ zu sehen verloren, weil uns beigebracht wurde, dass alles, was magisch usw. ist, Unsinn ist und nicht existiert, aber wenn Du Dir die Folklore eines jeden Landes anschaust, dann siehst Du, dass diese Geschichten ein Körnchen  Wahrheit  enthalten. Die Menschen respektierten die Erde und ihre magischen Kinder, aber im Laufe der Zeit  neigten wir dazu  mehr an die Computer zu glauben, aber schließ die Augen für einige Sekunden, und erinnere Dich, wie cool es war, ein Kind zu sein und den Glauben zu haben

RK: Im Gegensatz dazu sind die Promo-Photos von Skeptical Minds recht düster. Warum sind diese so dunkel und fast in Schwarz/Weiß?

SM: Weil unsere drei wichtigsten Worte, die die Art unserer Musik beschreiben ‚traurig‘, ‚aggressiv‘ und ‚depressiv‘ sind.

RK: Die Arbeiten zu Eurem neuen Album „Omega Thanatos“ sind inzwischen abgeschlossen. Das Album erscheint im Oktober. Dazu gibt es einen Comic. Wie kamt Ihr auf diese Idee?

Wir wollten ein vollständig illustriertes Comic-Buch erstellen, das direkt mit unseren Liedern verbunden sein würde, deshalb haben wir uns mit Alain Poncelet getroffen und Ideen diskutiert . Das Projekt dauerte mehr als 2 Jahre.

RK: Wie läuft bei Euch das Songwriting ab? Bringen alle Bandmitglieder ihre Ideen mit ein?

SM: Wir alle versuchen, einen Teil zu schreiben, ja.

RK: Karolina, von Dir gibt es auch viele sehr schöne Fotos abseits der Musik, als zauberhafte Fee oder auch als Figur aus der Mythologie. Was bedeutet Dir der Job als Foto-Modell? Sind die Ideen zu Motiven von Dir?

SM: Ich liebe die Arbeit als Foto-Modell, wenn ich das professionell machen könnte, wäre das großartig!

Die meisten Ideen kommen von mir, aber ich versuche immer, ein Brainstorming mit dem Fotografen durchzuführen und lasse  seiner/ihrer Phantasie freien Lauf.

A few weeks ago „Omega Thanatos“ was published, which is now the third studio album by the Belgian Industrial/Electro Metal band Skeptical Minds. A varied and multifaceted work which needs several runs in the player to fully get the grasp of it. There is also a comic book, which highlights the lyrics with various drawings. Reason enough to ask the band about some background informations.

RK: Hi Karolina, hi Michel. You are a Belgian band from Brussels, however, no one in the band is from Belgium. How did this happen? Please introduce your band for the German fans briefly.

Skeptical Minds: Hi Rainer, first of all thank you for taking your time for us. Almost all band members were already living in Belgium, except Karolina, when she joined the band she was living in Netherlands by then, as the duties for band became more serious she moved to Belgium to be closer.

RK: You have produced a comic book for your live DVD „Watch Your Live“. Also, for your latest album there is a comic book planned. How did you come up with this idea? Who came up with the story behind it and who has designed the drawings?

SM: We didn’t produced comic book for  „Watch your live “ it’s a DVD but without book, however for last album indeed we made CD + Comic book, which is called „Omega Thanatos“ . The concept was to make kind of soundtrack for the comic, if you listen carefully and read the comic you will see that all is connected and can’t be separated. Drawing were made by our dear friend (and a band member now) Alain Poncelet, who is great comic designer!  Story was made by the band and Alain.

RK: You use a variety of sounds in your songs that are not really typical for heavy metal and somewhat reminiscent of techno sounds. Furthermore you use a cello in your songs. There are also firm guitar How would you describe yourself your style of music. 

SM: It’s hard to describe our music as we don’t hold tide to one genre, we like to experiment a lot, there is some metal, rock, cold wave, rock, gothic, electro, industrial…

RK: Karolina, in the midst of the Industrial sounds and guitar riffs your voice often appears beautifully soothing. Do you actually take singing lessons?

SM: Thank you, I had some lessons in the past, but mostly I practise alone, recently I skype with my friend Aziza (Aria Flame) and gives awesome tips for vocals!

RK: This contravenes with your appearance on stage. You almost explode there. What do live performances, such as the Metal Female Voices Fest mean to you?

SM: It’s always great experience, I do feel like thunder. Volcano! Storm! Bang!

It is very pleasant to see so many people shouting songs with you, their smiles, at the end we are there mostly for them, It’s beautiful!

RK: Karolina, I first saw you at the 7th Metal Female Voices Festival 2009. Your bright blue dress and the silver crown in your hair caught my eye right away. It was only years later that I realized that the pretty fairy is the singer of Skeptical Minds. There are a lot of pictures of yourself as a fairy. How do you relate to the world of fairies and other myths?

SM: But I am fairy haha! OK seriously, I believe that there is other dimension world hidden from our eyes, we as an adults have lost the ability to “see“ things, we are taught that all what’s magical etc. is nonsense and don’t exist, but if you look in folklore of every country their stories came from somewhere right ? People used to respected Earth and her magical children , but as the time pass by we tend to more believe in computers, but close your eyes for few seconds, and remind yourself how cool it was to be a child and have faith

RK: In contrast to that the promotional photos of Skeptical Minds are rather bleak. Why are they so dark and almost black/white?

SM: Because our 3 main words that can describe theme of our music are: sad, aggressive, depressive.

RK: The work on your new album „Omega Thanatos“ has been completed now. The album will be released in October. There will be a comic again. How did you come up with this idea?

SM: We wanted to make fully illustrated comic book that would be directly connected with our songs, we have meet with Alain Poncelet and discussed about ideas, project took more than 2 years.

 

RK: Karolina, there are also many beautiful pictures from you beside the music,

as magical fairy or even as a figure from mythology. What does the job as a photo model mean to you? Are the ideas for the designs from you?

SM: I love photo-modeling, if I could make it professionally that would be great!

Most of the ideas come from me, but I always try to make brainstorming with photographer and let his/her imagination to burst.
